After years of work, it's finally time to find out if the world's first lab-grown "beef" burger matches up to the stuff you can find at your local burger joint.

During the "Cultured Beef" event held in London on Monday, two taste-testers — food scientist Hanni Rutzler and author Josh Schonwald — were the first to sink their teeth into this ultra expensive burger.

The final verdict: while the burger did taste "close to meat" and "like a conventional hamburger," the downside is that "It's not that juicy," Rutzler says in the video. "I miss salt and pepper."

The process for creating the burger cost more than $300,000. Why the expense? Cultured Beef's website states that "livestock contributes to global warming" and calls the lab-grown meat the "crucial first step in finding a sustainable alternative to meat production."

But if the rest of us hungry meat eaters are expected to pay that much just to sample it, they better find a way to make it tastier.
