A recent study found that there is such a thing as comfort food, proving the theory of how some foods make you feel good. These certain foods have the same chemical structure as prescription mood stabilizers. Chocolate is one of them.

Researcher Karina Martinez-Mayorga presented her findings at the American Chemical Society where her team compared over 1,700 food flavor ingredients with antidepressants and other drugs that are prescribed for depression.

Chocolate, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, tea and foods that are high in Omega-3 - salmon and nuts are structurally similar to valproic acid, which is the main ingredient in most mood stabilizing drugs.

But don't be quick to resort to chocolates and nuts as a replacement for medication if you have depression. Comfort foods work best when they are combined with healthy habits like getting enough and proper sleep and exercise.
