Doctors are getting all social media savvy too nowadays. And they've made medical and social media history by live tweeting an open heart surgery for the first time.

Doctors at Houston’s Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital have made medical and social media history by live-tweeting an open-heart surgery for the first time.

Dr Michael Macris and his colleagues, Dr Paresh Patel from Houston's Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital performed a double coronary artery bypass on a 57 year old patient. Dr Patel tweeted updates about the procedure and answered questions submitted by followers of the hospital's @houstonhospital Twitter account.

Dr Macris wore a camera attached to his head, while Dr Patel snapped additional photos too. The tweets and photos and videos were compiled in a Storify story created by the hospital. Check it out below, but be warned, its pretty graphic. The patient, made it through surgery.

The procedure lasted two hours, and Dr Patel provided updates on the type of surgery and what Dr Macris was doing and why. In one post, Dr. Patel called the live-tweeting “an educational look into a common double bypass #surgery.”

Houston’s NBC affilate reported that the hospital’s live-tweet event reached 225,000 viewers.
